Summer Reading Programs are great when done properly. Tracking the number of hours they read can be a sign of accomplishment, but pay attention to an improvement in comprehension and vocabulary, as well.
To set them up for real success, I recommend that you limit their choices but allow them to pick the books they want read.
And did they have fun? Helping them emotionally is just as important as the intellectual growth.
