Scratchboard Art

Scratchboard art is created by scratching lines onto a specially coated piece of paper or cardboard to reveal the colors underneath — like magic!  At the Georgetown branch library recently, we experimented with a couple of different types of scratchboard, as well as different scratching tools, and then created our own scratchboards with paper and crayons.

Beth Krommes is a children’s book illustrator who works with scratchboard to create AMAZING artwork for children’s books. Check out some of her books to see her illustrations in detail — like the Caldecott-award-winning title, The House in the Night, picture below.  They are beautiful!

Why not give this art form a try?  It’s scratch-tastic!

Summer Reading season is upon us!  Here are some fun — and useful — apps and digital technology the library offers for summer readers of all ages.

Of course, my favorite to recommend to those with an iPhone or iPad is the ACPL Family App.

The Family App includes a Reading Timer — start it up when you sit down to read, and then when you’re finished,  tap Save and then Log This Time.  Makes crossing off the circles on your Summer Reading Timesheet very easy!  A nice feature is that it keeps track of the reading times for multiple family members.

Looking for a fun book to read or READY activity for the younger children?  The Family App includes booklists of some of our favorite books as well as fun videos, like the one below, that demonstrate some simple activities to incorporate reading, writing, talking, playing, and singing into your day.

Listen or read along with an ebook on Tumblebooks (with picture books for younger children) or Tumblebook Cloud Junior (with chapter books and nonfiction for older readers), available for free via the Kids’ page on the ACPL website.  Reading and listening to ebooks and audiobooks counts toward filling in those circles on your Summer Reading Time Sheet!

Check out a Playaway and listen to a book — Playaways are devices that have a digital ebook already downloaded, all you need is a AAA battery and a set of headphones (the library will provide headphones) and you’re set!

Download an ebook or an audiobook to your iPad, Kindle, Nook, or other device with Overdrive.  Ebooks and audiobooks are great for traveling — they are “returned” automatically at then end of your check out period!

Need more ideas?  Visit us at the library – we are ready to help!

From mid-December through mid-January, visitors to Children’s Services at the Main Library were offered the opportunity to vote for their favorite picture book of 2014,  The ballot consisted of titles nominated for the ACPL Mock Caldecott Election, held at the library last weekend.  (To see what was chosen during that event, see this post).

And the winning title was…..

The Farmer and the Clown

Thanks to all who voted!  Congratulations to the five lucky winners whose names were randomly chosen to receive a FREE picture book.

The following post was written by Michal, a children’s librarian at the Main Library.
On January 2, Children’s Services hosted a program called Kids Have a Voice, Too!  What a wonderful way to start the conversation on how to make a difference in our world. Is the key to be kinder? Or maybe to live greener? Here are some of the beautiful posters and world changing ideas that the children who attended created. Here’s to making our world a better place!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The posters are on display in Children’s Services and will remain up until the end of the month. If YOU would like to add your world changing ideas and inspiring thoughts to our interactive wall, come visit and post an idea of your own.
