Most Mondays on this blog, we have been posting information about books which we believe are high quality and meet all the necessary qualifications to be considered for one of the highest honors in children’s literature… The Randolph Caldecott Medal. All of these posts have the heading “Mostly Picture Books”, have the category “Mock Caldecott“, and are listed below.
On January 12, 2013, adults were invited to join us for our Mock Caldecott Program, where we learned a little about the Caldecott Medal, had a lively discussion about our nominees, and then voted for our favorites, following the criteria of the real Caldecott Committee as closely as possible. Bookmark this page — we’ll be adding new titles most Mondays throughout the year.

Thanks! I appreciate your putting all the titles together onto one post.
You are very welcome! Glad you find it helpful.
What a wonderful collection! I love these books. And I am particularly happy to see MOOSE included. Thank you!
Kelly BIngham
I’m glad you like our list, Kelly! Thank YOU for writing such a great children’s book — I so appreciate children’s authors, kids deserve excellence.
I’m so glad to see Oh, No! by Candace Fleming included. I recently read it at our library staff members with other staff filling in the animal voices. I can’t wait to use it as part of a story-time!
What a great idea for sharing Fleming/Rohmann’s new book. It is a great participation story. Thanks for sharing, Peggy!
Your page of beauties here is a sweet sight (& site) to behold. Thank you.
We’re glad you like it, Jan. We’ll continue to add new titles each week. Feel free to comment on the titles we’ve posted. Clicking on each title will take you to that book’s individual post. Which would you like to see win the Caldecott Medal in January?
I’d like to suggest Harlem’s Little Blackbird: the Story of Florence Mills — amazing illustrations by Christian Robinson.
Thanks for the suggestion, Becky. We’ll be sure to look for it!
Our Annual Mock Caldecott Event was Jan 17th. I see that your event was on January 12th. Have you posted your winners? Our winners were somewhat surprising. First, we had more books that ever, about 70 titles. The selection groups were more divided about their choices than in previous years.
Our winner was Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen.
Our Honor selections in no particular order are… Unspoken: A Story From the Underground Railroad by Henry Cole, Spirit Seeker: John Coltrane’s Musical Journey by Gary Golio and Rudy Gutierrez, Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington by Jabari Asim and Bryan Collier (Artist)
My personal favorites are “A Home for Bird” by Philip C. Stead and “Each Kindness” by Jacqueline Woodson illustrated by E.B. Lewis, “This is Not my Hat by Jon Klassen, “Green” by Laura Vaccaro Seeger and “Unspoken” mentioned above.

Great choices, Melissa! Our Mock Caldecott winner this year was And Then It’s Spring, illustrated by Erin Stead. We also selected 3 Honor books; they were Extra Yarn, illustrated by Jon Klassen, Step Gently Out, illustrated by Rick Lieder, and More, illustrated by Brian Lies. We also held a Mock Newbery discussion and election. One of your personal favorites, Each Kindness, was the winner of the election! Check out the Honor books at http://acplkid.wordpress.com/2013/01/12/and-the-acpl-mock-newbery-winner-is/
When will the results of your 2013 Mock Caldecott be posted?
Hi, Rebecca,
So sorry about the delay in updating this post! The results of our Mock Caldecott Election can be found here. Now, we are anxiously awaiting the REAL announcements coming up on Monday, January 28th!
